Module - 3

Exercise 1:
Identifying topical sentence

Explore the above link and identify topical sentence in the following paragraph and write it in the blog.

My first day of college was a disaster. First, I went to the wrong classroom for math. I was sitting in the class, surrounded by people taking notes and paying attention to how to do equations, which would have been okay if I was supposed to be in an algebra class. In reality, I was supposed to be in geometry, and when I discovered my error, I had already missed the first twenty minutes of a one-hour class. When I got to the correct class, all twenty-five students turned and looked at me as the teacher said, “You’re late.” That would have been bad enough, but in my next class my history teacher spoke so fast I could not follow most of what he said. The only thing I did hear was that we were having a quiz tomorrow over today’s lecture. My day seemed to be going better during botany class, that is, until we visited the lab. I had a sneezing fit because of one of the plants in the lab and had to leave the room. When I finally finished my classes for the day, I discovered I had locked my keys in the car and had to wait for my brother to bring another set. My first day of school was so bad that I know the rest will have to be better.

Exercise 2:

Arrange the following jumbled sentences into a meaningful paragraph by using the given alphabet .

A.
Time may indicate the importance of the occasion as well as on what level an interaction between persons is to take place.
B.
The same applies for calls after 11:00 P.M.
C.
Different parts of the day, for example, are highly significant in certain contexts.
D.
Our realization that time talks is even reflected in such common expressions as, "What time does the clock say?"
E.
In the United States if you telephone someone very early in the morning, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call usually signals a matter of utmost importance and extreme urgency.
F.
A call received during sleeping hours is apt to be taken as a matter of life and death, hence the rude joke value of these calls among the young.

Exercise 3:

Arrange the following jumbled paragraphs into a single meaningful paragraph by using the given numbers.

1.
There was nothing the merchant could do, except return home where he loaded his donkey with more bags of salt. As they reached the slippery riverbank, now deliberately, the donkey fell into the river and wasted all the bags of salt on its back again.

2.
One beautiful spring morning, a merchant loaded his donkey with bags of salt to go to the market in order to sell them. The merchant and his donkey were walking along together. They had not walked far when they reached a river on the road.

3.
The foolish, tricky donkey again set on its way. On reaching the river he again fell into the water. But instead of the load becoming lighter, it became heavier.

4.
Unfortunately, the donkey slipped and fell into the river and noticed that the bags of salt loaded on his back became lighter.

5.
The merchant quickly discovered the donkey’s trick. He then returned home again but re-loaded his donkey with bags of sponges.
